Getting Started and New Players

Just fill out the New Player Wait List form on our website to let us know you’re interested. Once that’s done, the club will get in touch and may invite you to a skills-based player session before the next season starts.

Just a heads up, filling out the form doesn’t guarantee a team spot, as it depends on how many players and coaches we have available that season.

Domestic basketball in SA is community-level competition run by associations like ACBA, where local club teams play weekly games in a fun and structured environment. Games are refereed by paid officials, and it’s separate from the higher-level district competition.

Heccies participates in the two main ACBA competitions each year:

  • Summer Season – October to March (school terms 4 and 1).
  • Winter Season – April to September (school terms 2 and 3).

Heccies offers teams from Under 8s all the way up to Under 18s in the Adelaide Community Basketball Association (ACBA) competition. Your child’s age group is based on their date of birth.

  • For Summer season, players must be under the age of that competition before May 1st.
  • For Winter season, players need to be under the age before October 1st.

In some cases, ACBA may approve a player to join a younger age group if there’s a genuine reason—like physical ability or disability. Families will need to provide supporting information (such as medical documentation) for ACBA to review. All exemptions are decided by ACBA, so if you’d like to look into this, just contact the club and we’ll help you through the process.

You’re welcome to get in touch, but registering after the season has started usually isn’t possible. Team spots and player placements are locked in, so we recommend reaching out early to give yourself the best chance of securing a place.

Yes! We run Heccies Hoops and She Shoots in Term 1 and Term 3 each year. These are fun, supportive programs for new players to learn game basics, build confidence and develop ball-handling skills. She Shoots is specifically for girls who are new to Heccies and want to build skills in a positive, encouraging environment.

Registrations and Team Placement

Nominations for returning players usually open around 8 weeks before a new season.  You will receive an email with all of the details. Once players have nominated for the upcoming season, our volunteers will work to place players into teams. Following team announcements, players will then need to complete the full registration process and pay the full fees.  Waitlist players who have attended a come-and-try session will also receive an email invitation to nominate for the upcoming season.

If you miss the registration deadline, we can’t guarantee there’ll be a spot available. To avoid missing out, make sure to register as soon as the email comes through— and don’t forget to check your junk or spam folder just in case!

Teams are formed to be fair and balanced, with a focus on development and enjoyment. Using the club’s Player Placement Policy and coach feedback, the Player Placement Committee looks at age, ability, team balance, and for younger age groups, existing friendships. You can view our full Player Placement Policy for more details.

Teams are announced by email after the completion of the previous season, once selections are finalised. Each team will ideally have 8 players, in however numbers can range from 6-9.

When completing a nomination we encourage all parents to complete the friend / connection section. Our placement committee and coordinators really value detail and we do take these into account to support confidence and enjoyment. For older age groups, the focus shifts to creating fair and balanced teams, so while requests can still be made, they may not always be possible.

Teams are coached by volunteers, often parents or other family members, with support from the club. We rely on volunteer coaches and each team must have a coach to be entered into the competition. Without a coach, a team cannot take part in games.

Absolutely! Contact the Coaching Coordinator. No prior experience is required and training and support can be provided.

Fees, Payments and Uniforms

Season fees are currently set at $350.
Fees are reviewed each season and cover: game fees, team nomination costs, training venue hire, club administration and club coach support. Uniforms are not included in the season fees and must be purchased separately via our uniform shop.

Prior to each season, returning players who wish to join the upcoming season will be asked to pay a $50 nomination fee before registration. This fee is non-refundable and will be deducted from registration fees once the player has been placed in a team.

Yes. The SA Government’s Sports Voucher program is able to be claimed, if eligible.

We do ask that you check that your child has vouchers available before claiming using the SA Government Sports Voucher Search.  Ineligible voucher claims result in significant additional administration for our volunteers.

Families can pay fees in full at registration or request a payment plan by contacting the Chairperson. Please get in touch early if you need this option.

Yes, you will need the official Heccies singlet and shorts. Basketball shoes or sturdy sports shoes suitable for indoor courts are recommended. Additional Heccies merchandise is completely optional and can be purchased online or at selected club events.

Uniforms are available to purchase online and for new players, will need to be ordered as early as possible, as delivery takes 4-6 weeks.

Once uniforms arrive you will be notified for collection.

We also have a uniform buy back scheme where you can purchase good condition preloved uniforms at a reduced cost (subject to availability).

You can request a number, but final allocation is managed by the Uniform Coordinator to avoid clashes.

Training and Development

Training venues and training times can only be confirmed each season once teams and coaches are allocated. Sessions are typically held on weeknights at Morialta Secondary College or the UniSA Magill Gym.

Teams train once per week for 60 minutes.

If a coach can’t make it, they or the team manager will let families know through the team communication channels.

As we employ paid club coaches we always have support for teams.

Training cancellations are rare but can happen due to illness, venue closures, heat rules or other unexpected situations. Families will always be notified as soon as possible.

Your child should bring a drink bottle, a size-appropriate basketball, and sports-appropriate shoes.

  • U8-U12 boys and girls – Size 5 Ball
  • U14 boys and U14 & up  girls  – Size 6 Ball
  • U16 & up boys – Size 7 Ball

Games and Fixtures

All games are played on Saturdays. Younger age groups generally play earlier in the day, with games progressing through to the older age categories.

All fixtures, results, and ladders are available on the GameDay website and through the GameDay app. Once teams are allocated and players are uploaded, you can find your schedule and track results throughout the season.

On game day, players should arrive about 20 minutes before tip-off to warm up and get organised. Make sure your child wears their Heccies uniform, appropriate shoes, brings a water bottle, and any personal medical items.

Each team must provide a scorer for every game. Families may be rostered across the season by their teams coach or team manager.

Volunteering, Conduct and Club Involvement

Yes. All players, coaches, and families are expected to follow the Hectorville Basketball Club Policies, as well as the ACBA Code of Conduct and Basketball SA Codes of Behaviour. These guidelines promote fairness, respect and positive sideline conduct for players, coaches, spectators and officials to ensure a safe, supportive environment for everyone.

Yes. All volunteers working with children must hold a Working With Children Check (WWCC).  This includes coaches, team managers and administration staff/co-ordinators.

Absolutely! We’re always looking for volunteers and there are lots of ways to get involved, whether it’s a one-off helping hand or a longer-term role. Volunteering is a great way to be part of the community, meet people, and support the club. We’d love to have you on board, so contact us if you’re interested in helping out!

We are always interested in sponsorships or donations, and would be happy to work with you to find mutually beneficial partnerships. Contact us if you’re interested.
