“Super” Syd Goodfellow decided prior to the 1960 season that an U/17 side should be formed to provide a sporting interest for the lads in the area, and recruited some very good players to represent Hectorville for their first season.

The club commenced in the East Torrens Football Association, which later become the Norwood-North Football Association, until the formation of the S.A.F.A. of which Hectorville was an inaugural member. Some of these lads were promoted to our first senior side in 1961 in the reserves competition, and although the side did not win a game for the inaugural year, the Heccies name was becoming well known in the area.A local business man, Mr. J. Said donated the first set of jumpers, red, white and blue. Our first Club Captain was Ray Artis, who took over as Coach in 1962, during which we won our first match, and 1963 saw us make the finals in the B Grade competition for the first time. The U/13’s were formed in 1962 and the following year an U/15 side was also formed to bolster our senior sides in the years to come. The McCulloch family were the great social workers providing the back yard bbq to ensure that a bond between these lads representing Hectorville was provided.

In 1964 Hectorville Football Club combined with Magill United Cricket Club to form the Hectorville Sporting Club. Our first A grade premiership was achieved in 1967. Daly Oval was not the picturesque and playing surface that it is today. The words in the club song “knock em in the tar” was derived from the bitumen bicycle track that surrounded the oval. A lot of work was needed to demolish the bike track to assist in providing the wonderful oval that it is today. Those days a tin shed with a chip heater to provide the showering facilities were the change rooms, and a tin shed store room was re-painted and converted to a canteen, which provided the club with the necessary funds to ensure it continued. It should be noted that the Giovine family ran this facility for many years.

The late 60’s saw the club make further progress by purchasing a housing trust home adjacent to Daly Oval for $8,000 and volunteers converted it to become our first licensed clubrooms. Many a good time was had there and it provided the income required until it was sold for $20,000 to provide the deposit for our two storey complex on the oval surrounds. The current clubrooms were partly funded by the State Government and opened by Premier Des Corcoran in 1980. In 1982 the Football Club changed its name to Norwood Districts, but reverted to Hectorville the year after it joined the S.A.A.F.L. in 1990 where it has since established itself and is a well respected member of the S.A.A.F.L.

Hectorville Football Club is a section of the Hectorville Sports and Community Club, which also offers cricket, tennis, netball and athletics for juniors and seniors.
